PLANS by Lusaka City Council (LCC) to bring in a Chinese corporation to run a bus company in Lusaka does not have the people’s interest at heart.

Youth in Action for Sustainable Development (YASD) Programs Manager, Zebedy Lukwesa said the mayor’s statement to bring a Chinese bus company to start operating in the city will make the youths suffer because most of the bus services are offered by youths in the country.

He said there was need for full consultation and involvement of all stakeholders because most bus operators feed their families through the little they earn from driving buses.

“As YASD, we are against the mayor’s statement to bring in a foreign bus company because this will leave our youths out of business and make it hard for them to provide food and other basic needs for their families.

They should advice the already existing bus companies on improvements that would be made to effectively and efficiently serve the people instead of bringing in foreign companies,” said Mr Lukwesa.

He said LLC should focus on empowering the Zambian youths to promote entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency in today’s youth by offering small loans to improve, establish and purchase new buses.

“Government keeps talking about reducing poverty under the Seventh National Development Plan but keeps doing the opposite to achieve the laid out goals, it might think it is helping our country attain a much modern outlook when instead, it is just ruining the lives of its own citizens,” he lamented.

Mr Lukwesa therefore, he urged the government through the Minister of Local Government Honourable Vincent Mwale to stop LCC from going ahead with their plans.
