By NATION REPORTER GOVERNMENT has commended the Finland government for cooperating with the Zambian government towards supporting forest related programmes in Mwinilunga District through the Decentralised Forest and other Natural Resources Management.

Mwinilunga District Commissioner, Danny Bukali, said the program has contributed to the reduction in poverty and inequality as well as contribute to the improvement of environmental conditions.

"The programme also promotes women's involvement in local decision making and access to resources through local planning processes by way of devolving authority with right to manage rural natural resources," Mr Bukali said.

The program is being implemented in Ikelenge, Kasempa and Mwinilunga districts in North Western province and Shiwangandu, Chinsali and Nakonde in Muchinga province respectively.

The district commissioner was speaking in Mwinilunga yesterday during the commemoration for the international forestry day.

And Mr Bukali has advised people in the area to embrace good livelihood practices aimed at forest conservation to reduce on factors that contribute to environmental degradation.

Mr Bukali said people in the district must take full responsibility and take issues of forest conservation seriously as they carry out livelihood activities such as farming, charcoal burning among others as they are major drivers of deforestation.

He said in order to avert the high deforestation rate, there was need for concerted efforts in ensuring that community members planted more trees in their areas to invest in healthy forest for now and the future generation.
