THERE is need to put in a place wealth cre­ation strate­gies for dis­placed com­mu­ni­ties in the min­ing ar­eas, Chief Mu­mena of the Kaonde speak­ing peo­ple has ob­served

In an in­ter­view with the Daily Na­tion yes­ter­day, Chief Mu­mena said chal­lenges fac­ing com­mu­ni­ties that were dis­placed to pave way for min­ing ac­tiv­i­ties mainly in Sol­wezi was due to lack of ca­pac­ity to cre­ate wealth.

He said that tra­di­tional lead­ers had ob­served that com­pen­sat­ing the dis­placed com­mu­ni­ties was not enough to end the high poverty lev­els.

Some peo­ple that were dis­placed in Sol­wezi, Kalum­bila and Lumwana had con­tin­ued to com­plain that they were not ad­e­quately com­pen­sated by the Kansan­shi Mines, First Quan­tum Gold Tri­dent mine and Bar­rick Gold.

“There is need to put in place wealth cre­at­ing strate­gies in­stead of cry­ing for more help from the min­ing com­pa­nies,” he said
