Sol­dier guns down wife

Cen­tral police com­mis­sioner, Joel Njase con­firmed that War­rant of­fi­cer Pethias Mwape, 42, shot his wife Es­ther Mu­lombwa, 33, in the head be­fore tak­ing his own life with a bul­let to his head. And Mwape’s sis­ter, Chris­tine Mwape, told the Daily Na­tion in an in­ter­view at the Kabwe Hos­pi­tal Mor­tu­ary that her brother had called around 22:00 hours say­ing he had shot dead his wife. Mwape, a war­rant of­fi­cer of Ko­hima bar­racks shot dead his wife, Es­ther, a con­sta­ble at Kabwe Cen­tral Police be­tween 21:00 and 22.00 hours af­ter a mar­i­tal dis­pute at their home in Chind­win Bar­racks. Mr Njase said War­rant of­fi­cer Mwape took his own life by shoot­ing him­self in the head af­ter around 02:00 hours de­spite efforts by the Mil­i­tary Police, Anti Rob­bery Squad and Police to pre­vent him from com­mit­ting sui­cide. "I can con­firm that War­rant Of­fi­cer, Pethias Mwape has taken his own life af­ter shoot­ing his wife Es­ther to death at their home in Chind­win bar­racks af­ter a mar­i­tal dis­pute. "Police sur­rounded the house af­ter the in­ci­dent to try and en­gage the of­fi­cer who was armed from com­mit­ting sui­cide but he even­tu­ally shot him­self in the head and died," said Mr Njase. Ac­cord­ing to Police, af­ter killing his wife, Mwape bolted from home with the weapon but later came back and locked him­self in­side the house where he later took his own life. A check by the Daily Na­tion at the scene found armed Mil­i­tary Police, Anti Rob­bery Squad and Police had sur­rounded the house. Mwape’s sis­ter, Chris­tine told reporters her brother called around 22:00 hours to in­form her that he had just killed his wife. Ms Mwape ex­plained that dur­ing the phone call he told her to take care of their chil­dren be­cause he was go­ing to kill him­self too. “I rushed to their home af­ter that phone call and true to his word, I found my sis­ter in law on the sofa, dead. I stayed there for a while in shock and hop­ing she would some­how come back to life un­til the police came and took the body to the mor­tu­ary around 02:00 hours," she ex­plained. Ms Mwape said af­ter de­posit­ing her sis­ter-in-law’s body at the mor­tu­ary in the com­pany of police and went back to the cou­ple’s home, she found her brother had re­turned and locked him­self in­side and later shot him­self.
