Soldier guns down wife
Central police commissioner, Joel Njase confirmed that Warrant officer Pethias Mwape, 42, shot his wife Esther Mulombwa, 33, in the head before taking his own life with a bullet to his head. And Mwape’s sister, Christine Mwape, told the Daily Nation in an interview at the Kabwe Hospital Mortuary that her brother had called around 22:00 hours saying he had shot dead his wife. Mwape, a warrant officer of Kohima barracks shot dead his wife, Esther, a constable at Kabwe Central Police between 21:00 and 22.00 hours after a marital dispute at their home in Chindwin Barracks. Mr Njase said Warrant officer Mwape took his own life by shooting himself in the head after around 02:00 hours despite efforts by the Military Police, Anti Robbery Squad and Police to prevent him from committing suicide. "I can confirm that Warrant Officer, Pethias Mwape has taken his own life after shooting his wife Esther to death at their home in Chindwin barracks after a marital dispute. "Police surrounded the house after the incident to try and engage the officer who was armed from committing suicide but he eventually shot himself in the head and died," said Mr Njase. According to Police, after killing his wife, Mwape bolted from home with the weapon but later came back and locked himself inside the house where he later took his own life. A check by the Daily Nation at the scene found armed Military Police, Anti Robbery Squad and Police had surrounded the house. Mwape’s sister, Christine told reporters her brother called around 22:00 hours to inform her that he had just killed his wife. Ms Mwape explained that during the phone call he told her to take care of their children because he was going to kill himself too. “I rushed to their home after that phone call and true to his word, I found my sister in law on the sofa, dead. I stayed there for a while in shock and hoping she would somehow come back to life until the police came and took the body to the mortuary around 02:00 hours," she explained. Ms Mwape said after depositing her sister-in-law’s body at the mortuary in the company of police and went back to the couple’s home, she found her brother had returned and locked himself inside and later shot himself.
