BULAWAYO, Friday, July 26, 1991 — Gwanda Town Council will celebrate its attainment of town status at a function next month, reports the Zimbabwe Information Service.

The Chief Executive Officer, Cde Gilbert Mlilo, said in a statement on Tuesday that the town status was conferred on Gwanda on April 12 after a series of meetings with Government officials, including the Senior Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Cde Joseph Msika.

The statement said the Gwanda Town Board also held a number of meetings with Rural District Council Amalgamation Commission where it pressed for town status.

As a justification, it was pointed out among other things that Gwanda urban, the capital of Matabeleland South, was experiencing phenomenal growth both in terms of infrastructural facilities as well as in terms of population, and that with the peace prevailing in the region, this growth trend was likely to be sustained.
