BULAWAYO, Monday, July 29, 1991 — The District Medical Officer for Beitbridge, Dr Daniel Othol, has expressed concern at the rapid spread of the HIV virus in the area and has blamed this on international truck drivers who spend nights in the border town in transit to South Africa.

In an interview last week, Dr Othol said most patients coming for treatment at the Beitbridge District Hospital were tested HIV positive.

“In a week we receive three to four cases of patients testing HIV positive, a figure which is a major cause of concern,’’ said Dr Othol. He said the virus was mainly found in tuberculosis patients.

“We are constantly educating people on the hazards of casual sex but it appears that our words are falling on deaf ears because the number of people suffering from sexually transmitted diseases has gone up instead of down,’’ added Dr Othol.

Since the beginning of the year the district hospital recorded four Aids deaths, a figure which Dr Othol said was not a clear reflection of what was happening as many people who were believed to be suffering from the disease died at their homes.
