BULAWAYO, Friday, August 16, 1991 — The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Cde Dumiso Dabengwa, said in Bulawayo yesterday the Registrar-General’s Office issued only two million passports since independence and not 18 million as reported recently by one lawmaker.
Masvingo Central Member of Parliament, Cde Dzikamai Mavhaire, told the House of Assembly last month that 18 million passports were processed since 1980 and that many people currently possessed several valid passports which they abused to obtain the scarce foreign currency to import commodities in short supply on the local market from neighbouring countries.
Dismissing Cde Mavhaire’s statement as baseless and unfounded, Cde Dabengwa said that his ministry would not waste time investigating the matter “because there is nothing to investigate’’.
“Since independence the Registrar-General’s Office issued only about two million passports. That figure is nowhere near 18 million as alleged by Cde Dzikamai Mavhaire,’’ he said.
Zimbabwe has an estimated population of slightly more than 10 million people.
