8 judges short­listed for Supreme Court posts

THE Ju­di­cial Ser­vice Com­mis­sion (JSC) has short­listed eight judges, two of them from the Bu­l­awayo High Court to fill four po­si­tions at the Supreme Court.

In a state­ment, the JSC said in­ter­views for the short­listed judges will be con­ducted on Septem­ber 29 start­ing at 9AM in Harare.

It said the in­ter­views would be open to the me­dia and the pub­lic.

“Fol­low­ing the in­vi­ta­tion to mem­bers of the pub­lic and to His Ex­cel­lency, the Pres­i­dent, to nom­i­nate suit­ably qual­i­fied per­sons in terms of Sec­tion 180 (2) of the Con­sti­tu­tion, the Ju­di­cial Ser­vice Com­mis­sion re­ceived a num­ber of nom­i­na­tions which meet the qual­i­fi­ca­tions stip­u­lated in the law,” it said.

Two judges from the Bu­l­awayo High Court, jus­tices Ni­cholas Mathonsi and Fran­cis Bere will join six oth­ers jus­tices Priscilla Makan­yara Chugumba, Al­fas Mu­vavarigwa Chi­takunye, Charles Hungwe, Sa­muel Kubopa Kudya, Joseph Martin Ma­fusire and Laven­der Makoni for the in­ter­views.

The JSC is on a drive to bring jus­tice closer to the peo­ple and en­sure that mat­ters are heard on time. Re­cently it opened a per­ma­nent High Court in Masvingo, the third af­ter Harare and Bu­l­awayo.

There are plans to open sim­i­lar courts in Gweru and Mutare. — @okazunga
