Zifa announces committee to mobilise Afcon funds
ZIFA will soon announce a committee to mobilise funds for the Warriors ahead of the Total African Cup of Nations that will be held in Gabon next year.
Zimbabwe qualified for their third appearance at the finals with a game to spare. Their maiden qualification was in 2004 in Tunisia followed by a second appearance in Egypt two years later. The agony returned after 2006 until the appointment of Callisto Pasuwa as coach.
With qualification achieved, Zifa wants to ensure the Warriors don’t go to Gabon to make up numbers and is therefore trying to leave no stone unturned in a bid to make sure the trip is not disturbed by administrative potholes.
“We should be finalising the finer details on Thursday when I come back,” said Zifa president Philip Chiyangwa. The committee is expected to be made up of captains of industry, icons of the game and other sport celebrities. The Afcon 2017 qualifiers wrap up next month with Zimbabwe taking on Guinea in Conakry in Group L, while Malawi play host to Swaziland. Zimbabwe, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, Morocco, Algeria, Cameroon, Senegal and Egypt are the only countries that have booked their places in the finals alongside hosts Gabon. Caf have since announced that the draw for the finals will take place in Libreville on October 19 where teams will be put into four groups of four. Zimbabwe have failed to progress beyond the group stages in their two previous appearance at the finals.
