Townshend and Butcher soccer tourney begins
THE 59th edition of the Townshend and Butcher soccer tournament roared to life at the Barbourfields Stadium outside grounds on Sunday, with all Bulawayo Amateur Football Association (Bafa) teams taking part.
Mpilo United cruised into the quarter-finals after beating NGA Chronicle 13-12 in a hair-raising penalty shootout after both teams had failed to break the 2-2 deadlock in regulation time.
Laduma beat SBC Falcons 3-1 in one of the day’s thrilling matches. Despite going to the breather leading 1-0 through a 20th minute goal by Emmanuel Mugarurwa, Falcons did not know what hit them in the second half as Laduma came back super charged.
Sipho Banda opened the floodgates in the 62nd minute with a well-executed shot that beat the Falcons’ goalkeeper all systems out.
Njabulo Mpofu added the second in the 85th minute before Philisani Moyo sealed victory with an 89th minute strike. In another game, Anolle Castings succumbed to a 4-2 defeat to Safeguard, while Madamara beat Eleven Stars 3-1. Rebels were in a mean mood as they crushed Securico 7-0. Crusaders beat Dynamic Diesel 3-2, Unity Village edged Vipers 1-0 and Seven Warriors suffered a 0-3 defeat to United FC.
“We are happy with how the tournament started and we hope players will keep up the spirit they displayed on Sunday until the competition ends,” said Bafa vicechairman Charles Chunda.
The quarter finals will be played on September 4 at the same venue.
