Mat-North youth games team revolt

Chronicle (Zimbabwe) - - Sport - Senior Sports Reporter

A Sports and Recreation Commission senior official on Sunday called police to quell the revolting Matabeleland North youth games team that was demanding allowances promised before the games held in Chinhoyi.

The incident happened on Sunday at the City Hall car park soon after the team arrived from their unsuccessful tour of Chinhoyi where they emerged seventh overall.

The players, largely from Hwange juniors, were allegedly given $3 each. SRC Matabeleland North coordinator Newman Masuku called the police as he feared the boys could turn violent and destroy property.

“Why are they calling the police when we are demanding what is due to us? Is it because we have done what they wanted us to do and are therefore no longer important? We are hosting the games next year, let them know,” said one player.

Besides the issue of allowances, Team Matabeleland North was not given anything to eat from Chinhoyi and some had to use their own money to buy lunch.

Masuku dodged Chronicle Sport when approached for comment.

Matabeleland North sent three teams to the games because of lack of resources.
