BULAWAYO, Wednesday, August 31, 1966. — The first Bulawayo African youth festival, in which the City’s African youth are being kept fully occupied during their school holidays, enters its fifth day today. A “round the townships” road relay race for boys is the main feature of today’s activities.
The festival ends on Sunday afternoon with a jazz competition in the McDonald Hall, Mzilikazi Township. Fifteen youth clubs from all the City’s townships are taking part. The festival is also aimed at raising funds for the clubs which hope to make bigger contributions to the local charities. Yesterday was the clubs’ Field Day and several thousand children and parents gathered at Njube to watch competitions by club members.
There is to be a swimming gala for boys and girls at Mpopoma swimming bath tomorrow afternoon. A fete has been arranged for Saturday afternoon and before the end of the day a cheque for 20 pounds will be presented to Luveve African Brotherhood Society.
A Welfare Department official said the festival was the first of its kind to be held in Bulawayo African Townships. It had gone off to an encouraging start and more were planned for the future.
