BULAWAYO, Wed­nes­day, Au­gust 31, 1966. — The first Bulawayo African youth fes­ti­val, in which the City’s African youth are be­ing kept fully oc­cu­pied dur­ing their school hol­i­days, en­ters its fifth day to­day. A “round the town­ships” road re­lay race for boys is the main fea­ture of to­day’s ac­tiv­i­ties.

The fes­ti­val ends on Sun­day af­ter­noon with a jazz com­pe­ti­tion in the McDon­ald Hall, Mzi­likazi Town­ship. Fif­teen youth clubs from all the City’s town­ships are tak­ing part. The fes­ti­val is also aimed at rais­ing funds for the clubs which hope to make big­ger con­tri­bu­tions to the lo­cal char­i­ties. Yes­ter­day was the clubs’ Field Day and sev­eral thou­sand chil­dren and par­ents gath­ered at Njube to watch com­pe­ti­tions by club mem­bers.

There is to be a swim­ming gala for boys and girls at Mpopoma swim­ming bath to­mor­row af­ter­noon. A fete has been ar­ranged for Satur­day af­ter­noon and be­fore the end of the day a cheque for 20 pounds will be pre­sented to Lu­veve African Brother­hood So­ci­ety.

A Wel­fare De­part­ment of­fi­cial said the fes­ti­val was the first of its kind to be held in Bulawayo African Town­ships. It had gone off to an en­cour­ag­ing start and more were planned for the fu­ture.
