- Wynne Zanamwe Midlands Reporter

A 56-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in court for allegedly attacking his friend with a machete following a misunderstanding triggered by a bad joke.

Simblisio Dzingai Dzokai of 10 Arcadia village in Shurugwi appeared before Provincial Magistrate Mr Morgan Nemadire facing attempted murder charges.

Dzokai pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to September 9.

Prosecutor, Mr Kelvin Guvheya said on March 31 at around 8PM, Dzokai and his friend Sylvestor Nduna were on their way home from Rufaro business centre in Shurugwi after drinking beer.

“The two were very drunk and were in the company of Tafadzwa Chikiwa, Brian Maturure and Edmore Mutuke. The complainant shared a joke which did not go well with the accused,” said Mr Guvheya.

He said when they arrived in their village, Dzokai and Nduna went separate ways.

However, the accused went to his home, took a machete and allegedly followed Nduna.

It is alleged that Dzokai told Nduna that he had embarrassed him earlier on and he wanted to teach him a lesson.

“The accused struck the complainant twice on the head with the machete before Maturure and Chikiwa were able to restrain him. Chikiwa snatched the machete from the accused’s hands. The complainant sustained deep lacerations on the head,” said Mr Guvheya.

Nduna was rushed to Shurugwi District Hospital and a report was made to the police leading to the arrest of the accused.— @wynnezane
