BULAWAYO, Tuesday, October 8, 1991 — The National University Council may meet soon to consider an application by Solusi College to have its degree programme recognised by the Government, according to an official of the Seventh Day Adventist Church which runs the institution.
In an interview, the church’s director of education for the Eastern Africa Division, Dr Tommy Nkungula, said the church had submitted an application and expected the National University Council to consider it at its next meeting this month.
“Once the National University Council has considered our application, they will come and inspect the college and its facilities. Then they can make a decision,” he said.
The National University Council was formed recently to consider, approve, monitor standards of institutions of higher learning. Until recently, only universities affiliated to the University of Zimbabwe were allowed to operate in this country.
Dr Nkungula said the delay in applying for recognition of the degrees offered by his college was caused by shortage of funds to upgrade the college to meet Government standards. Funds were now available for the provision of proper facilitiess and proper facilities and expansion he said.
