BULAWAYO, Friday, October 25, 1991 — The Regional Director of Education for Matabeleland North, Mr Robert Gordon, has reminded education officers that they are representatives of the ministry and must therefore be exemplary in their conduct.

Closing a course for education officers in Bulawayo on Wednesday, Mr Gordon said: “As education officers you are representatives of the ministry, but, more than that, in the more remote areas you may be the teachers’ only contact beyond school level and in their eyes you are the ministry.’’

Mr Gordon, who described the officers’ task as that of ensuring that effective teaching and learning was taking place, said that this involved many things. He said that educational management was a means of achieving goals through the efforts of other people.

The course which was organised by the ministry’s Standards Control Unit, covered supervision and report writing, personnel function, public relations and guidance and counselling.

M,r Gordon said that guidance and counselling was very important because it was relevant to the development of children.

The course was attended by 63 education officers from Matabeleland North.
