MBERENGWA, Saturday, October 27, 1991 — Midlands police are investigating what appears to be a bizarre case of murder, in which a 12-year-old boy is alleged to have killed a boy aged 11 here.

A police spokesman said yesterday that the incident happened on Thursday near Vodza Primary School in the Mberengwa communal lands.

The spokesman said both the 12-year-old boy, from Gwenyanya village in Chief Muketi’s area and the deceased, identified as Simbarashe Gumbo of Muzvondiwa Village under the same chief, were at a borehole near Vodza School with other children.

The deceased then allegedly asked the other boy why he was looking at him with wide open eyes. It is alleged that the accused boy then stood up from where he was sitting and started assaulting the 11-year-old with clenched fists.

The boy being assaulted fell to the ground and died instantly, it is alleged. The spokesman said the boy’s body was conveyed to Mnene Hospital in the district for a post-mortem and investigations were in progress.

This is the second case within just over a year in which police in the Midlands have investigated a case of murder in which both the victim and accused were minors. In June, 1990, two girls from Shurugwi communal lands, who were aged eight and seven, allegedly kidnapped and murdered a two-year-old child.

However, police in the province recently said no charges of either murder or kidnapping would be preferred against the girls as they were considered too young to commit a crime.
