Mbalula re­wards Sun­downs with R700 000

CAPE TOWN — Min­is­ter of Sports and Recre­ation Fik­ile Mbalula has re­warded Mamelodi Sun­downs with R700 000 after their Caf Cham­pi­ons League hero­ics.

The Chloorkop side trav­elled to Egypt over the past week­end to de­fend a first-leg lead of 3-0 against Za­malek.

De­spite los­ing the match 1-0 in front of 60 000, pre­dom­i­nantly Za­malek, fans, Sun­downs clinched their first ever Caf ti­tle in the un­like­li­est of fash­ions after being re­in­stated into the com­pe­ti­tion.

On their re­turn to South Africa, Mbalula con­firmed that Sun­downs will be re­warded with a cash prize as a “token of ap­pre­ci­a­tion”.

On Tues­day, Sun­downs pres­i­dent Pa­trice Mot­sepe con­firmed that the $1.5 mil­lion (R20 mil­lion) first prize would be shared among the team.

Mean­while, the Brazil­ians will have to read­just their fo­cus to the Telkom Knock­out com­pe­ti­tion as they face Polok­wane City to­day. — News24.
