BULAWAYO, Friday, November 15,1991 — A man was shot in the arm in Bulawayo when police opened fire as he tried to escape after robbing a woman with four other members of the gang.
The man is in custody. One other member of the gang was arrested during the chase that ensued after the robbery, when he ran into a squad of plain clothes policemen who were on patrol in the area. A police spokesman said a gang of four robbed a woman at the intersection of Fort Street and 10th Avenue on Wednesday.
Two of the robbers held the woman while the other two took her goods, he said. Two plain clothes policemen came to the woman’s rescue and when they identified themselves to the robber, the gang fled from the scene.
The police gave chase. The spokesman said that two warning shots were fired when the robber refused to comply with an order to stop. When the robbers continued running the police shot one man in the arm. Two members of the gang are still at large. The man who was shot was said to be out of danger.
The police said he only sustained a minor injury in the arm. The woman who was robbed was reported to have fled from the scene of the robbery. The police said they were anxious to talk to her.
“Can she please report to the nearest police station because we would like to talk to her about the robbery”, the police spokesman said. Some of the stolen goods were recovered and the police are trying to determine the value. The spokesman said investigations were continuing.
