MIL­TON High School needs no in­tro­duc­tion in the aca­demic cir­cles as it is one of the giants among Bu­l­awayo schools. Be­ing the oldest all boys’ school in the city, Mil­ton High School is rich in his­tory that spans over a cen­tury. The school has evolved with its cur­ricu­lum. Twenty one sub­jects are of­fered for Forms one and two, 25 sub­jects at Or­di­nary Level and 13 sub­jects at Ad­vanced Level.

The school is a sports giant, hav­ing pro­duced some of the most well-known sports per­son­al­i­ties fly­ing the Zim­bab­wean flag high.

The school takes boys who come out as young re­spon­si­ble gentle­men. Six sport­ing dis­ci­plines are of­fered in the first term, 13 dur­ing the sec­ond term and nine dur­ing the third term.

The school boasts of func­tional sports fa­cil­i­ties for a va­ri­ety of sport­ing ac­tiv­i­ties. Two soc­cer pitches, an ath­let­ics track, 3 in 1 net­ball, vol­ley­ball and hand­ball court, two ten­nis courts, five vol­ley ball courts, three bas­ket­ball courts, two cricket fields, a darts room, a gym­na­sium, squash court and a swim­ming pool which is how­ever not func­tion­ing due to op­er­a­tional costs. The school has 16 ex­tracur­ric­u­lar ac­tiv­i­ties and clubs in­clud­ing chess, drama club, toast masters, in­ter­act, anti-Aids club and ju­nior coun­cil.

The school, on an an­nual ba­sis has con­sul­ta­tion days, Mil­ton Day ev­ery 25 July, speech and prize giv­ing day ev­ery sec­ond Fri­day of Oc­to­ber, a sixth form fo­rum, par­ents an­nual gen­eral meet­ing, Form One par­ents as­sem­bly, pre­fects se­lec­tion, and sub­ject pan­els.

The school was es­tab­lished on July 25, 1910; named af­ter Sir Wil­liam Mil­ton and ini­tially lo­cated on Parireny­atwa Street.

In 1961, Mil­ton was the largest school in the fed­er­a­tion with 1 150 boys en­rolled. Games houses at the school are named in hon­our of the first five head­mas­ters who ran the school from 1910 to 1946. The school had its first black school head in 1988, a Mr J. Mandikate.

The cur­rent head­mas­ter is S.Ncube who has been with the school since 2016, tak­ing over from Mr Wil­liam Ncube who spent two years at the school.

The school was se­lected by the Great Zim­babwe Univer­sity to be its co­hort. The univer­sity of­fers both un­der­grad­u­ate and post grad­u­ate de­grees from the ed­u­ca­tion fac­ulty. Lec­tures are ten­able at Mil­ton dur­ing the April, May, Au­gust and De­cem­ber hol­i­days on a block re­lease ba­sis.
