MILTON High School needs no introduction in the academic circles as it is one of the giants among Bulawayo schools. Being the oldest all boys’ school in the city, Milton High School is rich in history that spans over a century. The school has evolved with its curriculum. Twenty one subjects are offered for Forms one and two, 25 subjects at Ordinary Level and 13 subjects at Advanced Level.
The school is a sports giant, having produced some of the most well-known sports personalities flying the Zimbabwean flag high.
The school takes boys who come out as young responsible gentlemen. Six sporting disciplines are offered in the first term, 13 during the second term and nine during the third term.
The school boasts of functional sports facilities for a variety of sporting activities. Two soccer pitches, an athletics track, 3 in 1 netball, volleyball and handball court, two tennis courts, five volley ball courts, three basketball courts, two cricket fields, a darts room, a gymnasium, squash court and a swimming pool which is however not functioning due to operational costs. The school has 16 extracurricular activities and clubs including chess, drama club, toast masters, interact, anti-Aids club and junior council.
The school, on an annual basis has consultation days, Milton Day every 25 July, speech and prize giving day every second Friday of October, a sixth form forum, parents annual general meeting, Form One parents assembly, prefects selection, and subject panels.
The school was established on July 25, 1910; named after Sir William Milton and initially located on Parirenyatwa Street.
In 1961, Milton was the largest school in the federation with 1 150 boys enrolled. Games houses at the school are named in honour of the first five headmasters who ran the school from 1910 to 1946. The school had its first black school head in 1988, a Mr J. Mandikate.
The current headmaster is S.Ncube who has been with the school since 2016, taking over from Mr William Ncube who spent two years at the school.
The school was selected by the Great Zimbabwe University to be its cohort. The university offers both undergraduate and post graduate degrees from the education faculty. Lectures are tenable at Milton during the April, May, August and December holidays on a block release basis.
