Zera to educate consumers on safe use of LPG
THE Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (Zera) is in the process of introducing educational programmes for consumers on the safe use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) so as to reduce the number of accidents resulting from gas explosions, an official has said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the LPG product knowledge and duties of a filler training programme held in Bulawayo last week, Zera petroleum inspector Mr Israel Kuchocha said the regulatory body will soon embark on programmes meant to conscientise consumers on safe use of gas.
“This particular training which we hosted today is for the fillers who are also the retailers in the LPG business and we are hoping that by the end of the year we would have done educational programmes for the end users who are the consumers.
“Very soon we will be going into suburbs and townships countrywide to meet the people so that we help each other on the prevention of accidents caused by gas.
“Since the inception of Zera many cases have been brought forward but only eight cases have been recorded as gas explosions after proper investigations were carried out on the sites where the accidents were said to have occurred.
“In all these cases there was only one fatal case in Chitungwiza where one person died while in other cases people lost property worth over $30 000,” said Mr Kuchocha.
He also revealed that the translation of Zera literature into indigenous languages was at an advanced stage with the Safe use of LPG now available in Braille.
“We have managed to translate 90 percent of our literature into local languages for our message to reach a wider audience.
“In April we completed translating Safe use of LPG into Braille and we also have a video which explains our literature in sign language,” he said.
Zera is a body corporate established in terms of the Energy Regulatory Authority Act (Chapter 13:23) of 2011.
It is mandated to regulate the entire energy sector in Zimbabwe in a fair, transparent, efficient and cost effective manner for the benefit of the consumers and energy suppliers.
