Shot in the arm for Mzingwane High
FORMER Mzingwane High School pupils have donated 148 chairs and desks to the school as part of efforts to enhance learning at the institution.
The donation comes at a time the school is facing a shortage of furniture ahead of opening when schools are mandated to observe a number of measures to deal with the spread of Covid19. Speaking during the donation at the school yesterday, Mzingwane High School Old Boys Association (Moba) project manager Mr Aaron Chingombe said the group was targeting to source 640 chairs and desks for the school.
“We are targeting to supply the school with 640 chairs and desks and we have so far managed to secure 148 chairs and desks from a programme that will run until December. As per ubuntu values there is a need for one not to forget their roots and this donation is simply meant to achieve that by giving back to a place that gave us life mentoring skills,” said Mr Chingombe.
He said the donation was driven by the need to reimburse the shortcomings they may have done as adolescents where pupils usually destroy chairs and desks intentionally and unintentionally.
“As former students at this school, it is our responsibility to make sure that we reimburse what we destroyed. These chairs and desks are worn out by students and not parents or teachers. In that light, we want to also foster a culture to the students at the schools in the need to give back,” he said.
Mr Chingombe said as an association there had plans to roll out a mentorship and career guidance programme. School head Mr Moraka Magaya said the donation came timeously as the situation in the country has led to a number of organisations shifting focus to Covid-19 funding.
“We are humbled to see that the Mzingwane family is still intact and the timing is excellent considering that Covid-19 has crippled the funds of many schools,” he said.
Representing the parents, Mr Willard Dungeni, a former Geography teacher at the school from 1994 to 2014 said Moba was a clear example of every teachers’ dream, that is to see the students they taught excel in life.
“We are thankful for the donation as we believe this will inspire the learners to be greater people seeing that some of them who passed through this school are excelling in their lives. As parents, it is our role now to sell the idea to the children of ensuring that they keep safe these chairs and desks,” said Mr Dungeni.
