SALISBURY, 15 November 1942. — Mr C Russell Ridgway, Controller of Supplies, said that Southern Rhodesia had been lightly considered in the matter of transport and those countries which had been better favoured had recently been cut down to 60 percent.
The census was absolutely necessary and merchants could expect nothing until the information they required was transmitted to the countries concerned, which included the Union. Mr Ridgway added that whereas this census was based on the list of essentials furnished by the groups, he could not believe that they would obtain all the lines dealt with.
Mr Buckmaster had now been installed to look after their interests and he hoped that merchants would make full use of this service.
