BAKERS FINED

THREE Umtali bakers appeared in the Umtali Magistrates’ Court charged with selling underweight bread. They were all found guilty and fined $15 (15 days).

E. Zambellis, A. Doulatos and B.Mavrokefalos were visited by an assizes officer, who discovered variations in the weight of their bread.

Some were overweight and some were underweight, but on an average the loaves were a few grammes less than specified weight.

Zambellis explained that the bread dough lost weight while it cooled off after baking and could lose up to five ounces.
