SMOKERS, DRINKERS TO PAY MORE
PRICES of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes have gone up with effect from today in a move expected to earn the Government an extra $53 million in excise duty per annum.
Amid occasional out-bursts of laughter from Members of Parliament, senior Minister Bernard Chidzero announced his budget speech that clear beer will go up from $1,43 to $1,52 a litre, an increase of nine cents.
Spirits have risen by $1,68 from $12,55 to $14,23, while wines go up by 53 cents per litre. Cigarettes now cost an extra 22 cents per pack of 20, he said.
