Sun­day Mail scribe bags 2 awards

THE Sun­day Mail Health and Gen­der Re­porter Shamiso Yikoniko won the Nutri­tion and Well­ness Re­porter of the Year, and Health Re­porter of the Year at the 2016-2017 Na­tional Jour­nal­is­tic and Me­dia Awards in Harare last week.

The cer­e­mony was even more spe­cial for Yikoniko as with her as she scooped the two awards was her tot, Maqoba Mab­hena, who just a year ago was at the cen­tre of a na­tional cam­paign to help her un­dergo life-sav­ing surgery in In­dia.

Said Yikoniko af­ter ac­cept­ing the dual hon­ours: “I want to thank God for the awards as well as The Sun­day Mail editorial team for be­liev­ing in me.”

A holder of an English and Com­mu­ni­ca­tions de­gree from Mid­lands State Univer­sity, Yikoniko won the Na­tional Arts Merit Award (Print Me­dia) in 2013 and has also bagged the Anti-Mi­cro­bial Re­sis­tance Re­port­ing Award (Print Me­dia).

Other Zim­pa­pers jour­nal­ists who won awards at Njama last week were The Her­ald Arts Editor God­win Muzari, Sun­day News Re­porter Vusimuzi Dube and Sun­day News Se­nior Re­porter Robin Muchetu.

At the awards cer­e­mony, United Na­tions Res­i­dent Co-ordinator Mr Bishow Para­juli urged jour­nal­ists to play a role in na­tion-building.

The Zim­babwe Union of Jour­nal­ists awards were this year held un­der the theme “Me­dia for Sus­tain­able Devel­op­ment”.
