We cut our way to long wait times
Re: Desperation time for Notley government, Opinion, Jan. 17Chris Nelson’s column scoffs at public health cuts that are alleged to follow if the UCP wins the election. He calls the system “a monster that will grow and grow.” The closure of more rural facilities, moving the sick (and jobs) to larger centres is offered as a remedy.Let’s review the facts. A former Alberta Conservative government cut hospital bed capacity from 4.0 per thousand to 1.7. Alberta wait times doubled in just two decades. Peer comparator countries have 3.4 beds. The U.S. Commonwealth Fund places Canada 10th of 11 with the U.S. being in last spot.Having the longest wait times of similar countries earned us this distinction.
