Beware of big budget promises

Naomi Lakritz is right — the Klein era did include reckless cost-cutting, foot-dragging and a surplus of empty promises.Hospitals, schools, courthouses and roads degraded from neglect. Health took a big hit. Our system is now known for the excessive wait times for necessary services. Service cuts hurt everyone. Short-staffed nurses burned out. Standards and infrastructure eroded.Yet, all these cuts came at a time of soaring population and full provincial coffers. Successive governments inherited the mess. Credit must go to the Notley government for what they have managed to accomplish. Albertans should be wary of those who promise to save you money while improving everything. The miracle of “the loaves and the fishes” is not likely to be repeated by the UCP.Ralph Coombs, Calgary
