PressReader - LStep Channel - Protests offer false, hateful ‘solutions’
The Dec. 8 and Dec. 15 Prairie Freedom Movement protests put on under the guise of the Yellow Vest protests from France are an attempt to channel the public’s fears about the growing threats to our survival and economic inequality towards hateful and false “solutions.”Attacking the carbon tax and the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration is simply xenophobic, racist and climate-change-denying. They wish to pressure and confuse us by identifying anyone who wants to be socially, economically and ecologically progressive as voting for Trudeau. Our planet is being systematically destroyed by carbon dioxide pollution. The polluter must pay for their pollution or cut emissions, plain and simple.New and more employment is coming with the just transition into a carbon-neutral economy. These are real, concrete solutions. The movement of people around the globe is not new, nor will it change soon. And it will get worse with climate change.Think of the hundreds of millions who will be displaced due to flooding, droughts and climate catastrophes already seen across the planet. Building walls and restricting movement are not viable, humanitarian or peace-filled solutions.Humanity must work together, not be more fractured or divided. Global solutions are possible, and one of the best ways to tackle global issues.Hope cannot be fuelled by fear and hate.Just because you are afraid of immigrants and want a pipeline doesn’t mean that you can put on a yellow vest and people will automatically follow you.Jim Elliott, chairperson,Regina Chapter of the Council of Canadians
