Partner carrier caused outage: Sasktel
Sasktel says Monday’s sporadic outage that affected long-distance and toll-free calling was caused by another telecommunications company outside of the province. The intermittent outage lasted from approximately 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sasktel would not reveal which of its partner carriers was the source of the outage.Greg Jacobs, external communications manager for Sasktel, explained that telecommunications companies will use other networks outside of their home base to allow customers to make long-distance calls.“So the issue in this case wasn’t with Sasktel’s network at home, it was with a partner’s network outside of the province,” said Jacobs.Because the outage was intermittent and extended to both land line and cellphones, Jacobs said it would be “nearly impossible” to calculate the number of Sasktel customers affected. Jacobs said the outage was widespread and province-wide.Several police services in the province experienced outages on their non-emergency lines during the outage.
