Re: OPL mulls fundraising push for super library, Dec. 7. I wish I could share Mayor Jim Watson’s confidence that our proposed new library will rival those recently built in Halifax and Calgary. There are a half-dozen reasons that shake my confidence but I’ll stick to the more egregious ones. Both those cities had an international design competition while Ottawa simply chose an architecture firm with limited experience in building institutional complexes. The location is nowhere close to downtown. The beautiful Halifax library is in the heart of that city. And there may be some advantages to teaming up with Library and Archives Canada but I feel this joint venture with a federal agency is problematic and will lead to delays and disputes.
