BREXIT : A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

Some people related to the World Trade Organisation are suggesting an “all-Ireland solution” to avoid the “backstop” and keep the “Good Friday Agreement” alive. All goods and services would flow freely between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, thus avoiding a “hot border.” There would be customs checks of goods flowing between “all Ireland” and Britain. Northern Ireland would remain as a member of the United Kingdom but as a difererent Customs Zone (like Tierra del Fuego in Argentina).

Maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel and at the last minute a reasonable deal that satisfies both the UK and the EU will be agreed.

USE YOUR OWN BRAIN!

Once again there are less and less Robert Coxes, Andrew Graham-Yoolls and James Neilsons, and more and more wishy-washy newsmen adapting, without any sense of principle, to what they believe are changing political tides.

It is really quite disgusting, but not at all surprising, to observe how the majority of those working in the different media, assuming as a foregone conclusion that the populists will be back in government by December, are desperately clambering onto the corresponding bandwagon. As usual, and particularly in difficult times (remember the 1970s?), very few of those giving out or commenting the news have the courage and the ethics to be objective in their reporting.

The reason to bring this up today is that, at this stage of the game, loads of people – probably a majority – are convinced that the electoral process has been defined and the victors anointed, thanks to the biased information poured on them. And, in fact this is a perverted distorsion of how things stand because, although things look really tough for the ruling coalition, the chances that the results of the first round in October force a run-off are, against what we are generally told, most definitely there.

So, if you happen to be someone who wants a victory over the populists but is, at this stage, under the demoralising influence of all the crap heaped upon us, please follow my advice and use your own, and not another’s, brain!

Cheer up, the battle is definitely not over. On the contrary, all the contradictions in the populists’ field are playing in favour of the ruling coalition, and a pleasant surprise very possibly is coming the right way. So, up with those spirits, and filter properly the information which reaches you, discarding what is ultimately simply subjective.

And remember...

BASKETBALL LIFE LESSONS

Although Spain defeated Argentina in the Basketball World Cup, our squad’s performance was absolutely brilliant.

There’s so much to learn from these players, their discipline, their commitment, their passion. We should listen to star Luis Scola’s advice and apply it to our everyday life. There’s no magic here, he says. Simply hard work, consistency and a healthy lifestyle.

Unfortunately, as a society we lack that inspiring team spirit, that feeling of pride and loyalty that exists among the members of a group. Particularly in politics, that vanity fair plagued by “divos” and “prime donne.”

This team spirit should undoubtedly be nurtured at school, from a very early age. After all, we all belong to the Argentine Team, in spite of individual differences. And our goals in common should prevail. Irene Bianchi Ringuelet, La Plata www.irenebianchi.com.ar

BATTLE OF THE BULGE: PART LXI

Dear Sirs,

Alberto Fernández has been dubbed ‘ Ma

mushka’ by a leading local politician. Like the fabled Russian dolls, you can discover various editions of the Peronist candidate, particularly over time. He is on record that anybody who believed that the deal signed in the past by the Kirchnerista government with the authorities in Iran was not a cover-up was a fool. ‘ Se non e vero....’

Meanwhile, the economy droops and inflation jumps up various notches, not helped by the sudden increase in the price of crude oil, as a consequence of the unexpected visit of aggressive drones to the Saudi Arabian oilfields. The next 35 days should be most interesting, as we approach what will prove key presidential elections in Argentina.

Macri-monial problems ahead, and no mistake!!!

Bust wishes, David Parsons Via email
