UGLY DEBATE

Honestly, I thought I had seen and heard it all, but last Tuesday’s US presidential debate has surpassed it all. How could we define it? Utter chaos at its worst.

Trump has always been a bully, a racist and a male chauvinist. That’s no surprise, is it? It’s his trademark. Moreover, he always sounds and looks like a spoiled brat. His tantrums are legendary, so unbecoming for the president of one of the most powerful nations in the world.

Obviously, he must be quite scared of losing the next election, because if not, he would have remained calmer, more self confident, more relaxed. Instead, he kept interrupting Biden, intimidating and debasing him, making false claims, lying openly, disregarding the rules of the debate. So embarrassing, such a blunder, so inaccurate, so useless. A very cheap show, watched by millions all over the world.

I find it hard to understand how any US citizen could vote for this guy again, after seeing him stark naked, revealing his true nature once again. If he won (which I doubt), he wouldn’t be to blame. It would be the people’s fault. Americans, please, for the whole world’s sake, vote and do so responsibly. We are all on the same boat. We’ll be watching you.

BLUNTLY

The Supreme Court decision to accept the per saltum case put to it by judges victimised by the Kirchneristas may eventually be seen as a turning point towards the institutional reconstruction of Argentina. But, put bluntly, while political warfare continues, time is running out for the economy, and we may well be on the way to a case in which the operation is successful but the patient dies.

By now it is quite obvious to anyone who has a business, including myself, that the disaster we have run into will make the 2001 crisis look like chicken feed by comparison. In fact I shall go so far as to say that if a shock correction of the economic road is not undertaken in a very short time, we will have nothing less than a catastrophe as never seen before in our country. It will be as if we had lost a war, although our buildings remain intact. The way international companies and individual citizens are leaving for abroad is proof of these worrying expectations.

So when we see politicians on both sides of the rift discussing matters concerning the midterm elections of 2021, we must be conscious of the fact that they are living universes apart from reality, a reality which implies that “It’s the Republic AND the economy, darn it”!

P.S. Oh, and by the way, the happenings of this week prove that it is very high time that we get rid of the electoral closed lists (listas sabanas)! Harry Ingham, City

BATTLE OF THE BULGE: PART 114

Dear Sirs,

The Supreme Court took an important decision this week and sprang to the defence of three members of the Judiciary who are involved in investigations concerning the legal problems of the vice-president and her brood, guaranteeing them temporary stability. A promising portent, within a republican context.

Legal wishes,
