TWO STEPS FORWARD

-

In life, one often has to first take a step backwards to be able to take two steps forwards. Decidedly the Republic took a large step backwards in the 2019 PASO, but after the positive tsunami last Sunday, chances are that eventually our country will soon be able to take two or more steps forwards. That is, if we don’t trip over the same stone twice, and have learnt the lesson!

Personally I am optimistic about the medium and long term prospects because, at last, it would seem that a majority has realised that our problems have no easy fix and that there’s no such thing as a free lunch. What is more, the opposition will deliver to Congress a good amount of new, well-qualified faces, which promise us the best collection of legislators since democracy returned in 1983. All this when, at the same time, the populists stand a good chance of losing their power to block positive congressional action or install ghastly laws.

This said, we must continue to be vigilant and keep our eyes wide open, because as long as we continue being ruled by ‘Kruella De Vil’ and her subjects we can expect all the dirty tricks in the book. Consequently it is essential to insist that, unless you have a foot in the grave or some other serious impediment, you must once again turn out and vote in the November elections and, what is more, if possible help out to prevent any foul play on polling day.

The Republic is definitely on safer ground today than it was a week ago, and we can all give a sigh of relief, but it would be irresponsible and foolish of us to have the hubris to think that the danger is definitely over. We must stay alert!
