OUR BIG BROTHER

-

The dystopian society described by George Orwell in Nineteen Eighty-four is unlikely to occur in modern Western Europe and the North American countries, but in Argentina there seems to be already a Big Brother prying into our homes. Security Minister Anibal Fernandez has shown he can render our lives insecure by his readiness to reveal information of a confidential nature about us, as shown by last week’s scandal when newspaper cartoonist Cristian Dzwonik, better known as Nik, posted a tweet criticising the government’ subsidies. In no time Anibal Fernandez tweeted back an intimidating message saying that Nik’s daughters attend the ORT School. By making this statement, the minister gave himself away, showing that he had made a point of spying on the cartoonist’s family. Nik responded through his comic-strip character named Gaturro with a speech bubble reading “Con nuestros hijos no“(“Don’t meddle with our children”). We have had enough of the minister’s surliness and vicious disrespect towards former president Mauricio Macri – He should know his thuggish attitude is likely to seal his fate and that of most Kirchnerites as they will have to bend with the fin de siècle wind that is already blowing.
