Checking the gauges on Ev-linked investments in Ontario and Quebec
VOLKSWAGEN POWERCO
A $7-billion total investment that will employ about 3,000 people when it opens in St. Thomas, Ont.
Subsidies: It will get $8.6 billion in production subsidies from the federal government and $700 million in construction support from Ottawa. It will get $6.8 billion in production subsidies from the Ontario government. It will get $500 million in construction support from the Ontario government. That’s $16.6 billion in total support.
Jobs: It will employ 3,000.
CAMI ASSEMBLY
A $1 billion total investment by GM Canada in the Ingersoll manufacturer for production of an EV delivery van.
Subsidies: Although both Ottawa and Ontario governments pledged $259 million in support, this was not listed by the federal budget office as an EV investment. This plant has been idled.
Jobs: It was to maintain 1,100 workers.
VIANODE
A $3.2-billion synthetic graphite manufacturer announced for St. Thomas is not on the official federal budget office list, as it was confirmed after the list was compiled. Subsidies: It will receive $670 million from the Ontario government and $500 million in financing from Export Development Canada. Jobs: It will employ 1,000.
STELLANTIS/ NEXTSTAR
A $5-billion investment from the automaker and its EV battery partner in Windsor, Ont.
Subsidies: It has been promised $12.2 billion in production subsidies from the federal government, and $500 million in construction support from Ottawa. The Ontario government will give $5.4 billion in production subsidies and $500 million for construction. That’s $18.6 billion in total government support.
Jobs: It will employ 2,500.
HONDA
The Japanese automaker pledged a $15-billion capital investment in several Ontario EV plants. This project has been paused.
Subsidies: About $5 billion in support from federal and Ontario governments was pledged.
Jobs: It promised about 1,000 new jobs, and maintained 4,200 more.
NORTHVOLT
The EV battery maker announced a $7-billion capital investment in Quebec. It has been paused.
Subsidies: The $8.2 billion in support from the federal and Quebec governments has been cancelled.
Jobs: It promised 3,000 new jobs
FORD ECOPRO
The $1.2-billion total investment will process cathode active materials to supply batteries for Ford’s electric vehicles.
Subsidies: It will get $322 million in construction support from Ottawa and $322 million in construction support from Quebec. That is $644 million in total support.
Jobs: It will employ 345.
GM POSCO
The $600-million total investment will process cathode materials for EV battery production.
Subsidies: It will get $148 million from the federal government and $148 million from the Quebec government, for $296 million in total support.
Jobs: It will employ 200.
UMICORE
The $2.7-billion total investment in the plant that was to process cathode materials has been paused.
Subsidies: It was to get $551 million in construction support from the federal government and $425 million in construction support from Ontario. That’s $976 million in total support.
Jobs: It was to employ 600.
VOLTA ENERGY SOLUTIONS
The $750-million total investment is a copper processing plant.
Subsidies: It will get $70 million in tax credits from Ottawa and $150 million in construction support from the Quebec government. That’s $220 million in total construction value.
Jobs: It will employ 260.
LION ELECTRIC
The $184-million total investment makes school buses and trucks.
Subsidies: It will get $50 million in federal construction support and $50 million in support from Quebec for construction support. That’s $100 million in total support.
Jobs: It will employ 135.
NOVA BUS
Will invest $185 million in the business that makes buses.
Subsidies: Will get $15 million in federal support for construction and $15 million in Quebec support for construction, for $30 million in total support.
Jobs: It will maintain 1,100 jobs.
FORD
Had pledged $1.8 billion for EV production in Ontario, but has scrapped those plans.
Subsidies: It was to get $295 million from the federal and Ontario governments.
Jobs: It was intended to maintain 5,400
jobs.
STELLANTIS
Pledged $3.6-billion total investment for Brampton and Windsor assembly plants to convert to EV production. These investments have been paused.
Subsidies: That prompted $529 million in federal support for construction and $513 million from the Ontario government for roughly $1 billion in total support.
Jobs: It was to employ 2,500 jobs.
