How Women’s Refugee Care makes transitioning to life in RI easier
The Providence Journal and United Way of Rhode Island have partnered to highlight the state’s nonprofits. Each week, a nonprofit identified by United Way will be spotlighted in the Providence Sunday Journal, and the United Way will share how it supports that organization.
This week, we feature Women’s Refugee Care, an organization and resettlement agency that serves as a center of support, resource exchange and cultural preservation for the refugee community in Rhode Island.
We asked Executive Director Aline Binyungu to tell us more about the organization.
What is your mission and vision?
Women’s Refugee Care’s mission is to help refugee families transition to life in the United States by supporting their journey toward self-sufficiency and active membership in society while honoring their unique cultural and ethnic identities. As a resettlement agency, we collaborate with Church World Service (CWS) to make the transition as smooth as possible for refugee families coming to the United States. We assist them in achieving self-sufficiency and productivity and ensure they receive the support they need (such as housing resources, community involvement, food supplies and more) to establish a stable and dignified life in Rhode Island.
Our vision is for a Rhode Island where everyone works together to empower refugee families, especially women, by advancing their rights and promoting gender equality, while honoring their potential and respecting their cultural values. We believe that well-informed women and mothers nurture healthy families and make a positive and lasting impact in their communities.
How do you measure success?
We measure our success by the number of families we have served and their progress over the years. At WRC, our success lies in seeing the refugee families we serve succeed and integrate better into American society. We serve more than 300 families in our center every week. So far, we have successfully helped thousands of refugee families within our community find housing, food, clothing and job placement. We ensure that refugee families receive the best support they need, can sustain themselves, and have their basic needs met.
