First Chilli Boys goal was an emotional affair Sekotlong
Scoring a late equaliser against Stellenbosch on Friday was an emotional affair for Chippa United centre-forward Thokozani Sekotlong.
The 29-year-old’s last-gasp goal saw the Port Elizabeth side claim a vital point as a result of their 1-1 draw at the Tuks Stadium in Pretoria.
Chippa are now 12th on the Absa Premiership log with 31 points and look to be heading towards relative safety from the relegation scrap happening below them.
The goal was also Sekotlong’s first since joining the Chilli Boys in January.
“The goal meant a lot for the team,” the former Mamelodi Sundowns player said.
“At the end of the day, I cannot be singled out because it was a team effort.
“We put the team [Stellenbosch] under pressurePfoRra long time.
“It looked like it was coming but in the end eventually it came so obviously it was a big thing for us.
“Like even the players who were watching from the stands came running all the way to celebrate with us to show how big and the important the goal was.”
“It was a passionate and emotional moment for me as it was also my first goal for Chippa.
“Knowing that I was able to help the team to get that valuable point after coming on as a substitute and making a difference was great.”
Ideally, he said, teams did not prefer to leave things until the last moment but they would take it and run.
“I felt that we fought well as a team, like we have been doing.
“In the other game against Baroka, we defended very well as team and in this game, in the second half, we attacked very well as a team. We were very resilient.”
When asked how will they would approach their mouthwatering fixture against Kaizer Chiefs tomorrow, Sekotlong said: “We will take the game as it comes.
“We need the points so we definitely want to win.
“We will see how the game goes on the day but we want the three points so we will be attacking.”
The Chilli Boys are looking to repeat the upset they managed last season when they beat Amakhosi 1-0 in their last match of the season.
“Most of these games are battles. It’s hard to tell what the outcome of the game will be beforehand.
“I think if we go into the game like we were in the last game and against Highlands Park and Baroka where we are mentally tough.
“It’s not the prettiest of football so we need to be mentally strong and ready to tackle whatever comes our way.
“Chiefs have a lot of physical and tall players.”
