CHARLIE DOIG

He’s never smoked and he doesn’t cry. Shaun Brown meets the ‘Robot Boy’

- Boxing · Martial Arts · Sports · Mike Tyson · Dundee · Ricky Burns · Steve-O

When and why you started boxing:

I started boxing because when I was younger, I used to play football and I was okay at it, but I was really unfit. All the mums and dads on the sideline used to think I was a smoker, but I wasn’t. So, I started boxing to get fit. Went once and then never looked back.

Favourite all-time fighter:

Mike Tyson. He was an animal. He was like a wee dog.

Best fight you’ve seen:

When Lomachenko beat Rigondeaux because that was meant to be a 50/50 fight and Lomachenko took him to school.

Personal career highlight:

I just boxed in the Caird Hall in Dundee. That’s one of the biggest venues in Dundee. All the time I’ve been boxing I’ve been meant to box in it and it’s always fell through. It was good to finally get that one under the belt.

Toughest opponent:

Either Mark Mckeown or Frankie Cleary. The pair of them. When I fought they two we just went to war.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:

I like to use my southpaw style a lot. That and nothing really fazes me. Hit me with you want and I’m always coming back. My worst is maybe my discipline. Sometimes I see red. I like to go for it.

Training tip:

There’s a lot of people out there that will tell you different, but you should always take in what everybody’s saying and try it and work out what works for you. Everyone’s going to have a different opinion, there’s no right and wrong answer. It’s about knowing your body and what works best for you.

Favourite meal/restaurant:

Nando’s. Chicken with broccoli and rice when I’m training.

Best friends in boxing:

Training with Ricky [Burns]. He’s brought me on loads. My mates Tyler Jolly and Sam Hickey. One of my best-mates from school Alan who has started boxing. We’ve got a good group.

Which other athlete would you like to be:

Conor Mcgregor back in the day when he took over the UFC.

Last film/tv show you saw:

Love Island.

Who would play you in a film of your life:

Steve-o from Jackass.

Have you ever been starstruck:

Not yet.

Last time you cried:

I’m not really a crier. My mates call me Robot Boy because I’m emotionless.

Best advice received:

One day my great hgrandmother said, “Just stick in till you stick out.” That’s stuck with me.

Something not many people know about you:

I try and juggle a full-time job as a Maintenance Technician and box. I’m up and down the country every day. I do about 6-700 miles a week in my car.
