Variety is the spice of life, and this is also true when creating scenes in 3D software. One of the key tell-tale signs of a computer-generated scene is the sight of identical copies of the same object. This can be especially true when creating natural landscapes such as forests.
Laubwerk, the developer of the Plant Kit plugins for Cinema 4D and 3DS Max, has recently released the SURFACESPREAD plugin for Cinema 4D.
SURFACESPREAD allows the creation of multiple instances of an object across a parent object. SURFACESPREAD then allows a wide range of options to control what can be done with the instances. From scale, and rotation to the ability to choose cloners by altitude, to name but a few.
Using a workflow that will be familiar to Cinema 4D users, SURFACESPREAD has its own modifiers for distribution and scale, which like a lot of the creation attributes can be linked to splines, vertex maps or polygon selections.
For these features alone SURFACESPREAD would be worth the money, but there is more. SURFACESPREAD comes with its own landscape object, which offers many more features than the native Cinema 4D equivalent. There is also SPREADROCK, which is a procedural rock-creation object. As a free gift there is the fantastic Wire Object, which creates a spline from a series of nulls, allowing easily modifiable curves, which are easier to animate than a normal Cinema 4D spline.
Combine these features with a great set of texturing materials, including an incredibly useful road material, and this is a truly successful plugin for Cinema 4D in that while SURFACESPREAD is great for landscape creation, it can also be used with many of the core tools within Cinema 4D for any use.
