This bril­liant im­age is based on an il­lus­tra­tion of the same name by Cory Loftis, and when 3D artist Javier Diaz came across it he saw an op­por­tu­nity to ex­pand his skill set. “I re­ally wanted to do it jus­tice, so I looked for a good way to cre­ate feath­ers,” he ex­plains. “I was told Yeti was the way to go, as it’s a quick way to change things non-de­struc­tively. This was also my first time us­ing Hou­dini to gen­er­ate a VDB, and luck­ily the pro­gram made it very easy to gen­er­ate one.”

Javier’s process be­gins with lay­ing out ba­sic shapes and forms in Zbrush.“i'll then re­topo and un­wrap in Maya, be­fore I move into cre­at­ing the se­ri­ous de­tails,” he con­tin­ues. “Once I've done the mod­el­ling, I’ll be­gin work on the groom as that takes the long­est. Once that's all laid out I move into shad­ing and tex­tur­ing. This was also the first time I've used Red­shift at home and I loved how quickly it al­lowed me to look dev this char­ac­ter. I was able to ex­port all the fur and feath­ers to Red­shift Proxy, as that helps me look dev while the IPR is go­ing.”
