You can do your initial work in Substance Painter at rather low resolution. This will ensure quick response and generally make the process more enjoyable. Then when it comes to adding small details or to export, you can up the resolution of the layer in which you need more detail. Due to the way Substance Painter works, you should be able to do this without losing any details.
