Freelance 3D texture artist Anna Kaufmann spent a month working on this project alongside her main work. Kaufmann began her career as a 2D artist back in 2017, before trying out Fusion 360 and becoming interested in the capabilities of game engine technology. “Now I'm studying Unreal Engine and I see huge prospects for myself,” she tells 3D World.
The main section of Kaufmann’s high-poly model was created using traditional subdivision, giving her more control over the edges. “I made the different edges vary in size to show the nature of the materials. For example, sharp edges for metal and softer ones for leather,” she explains. “I used Zbrush to convey the effect of mechanical polishing with the Trim Dynamic and Smooth brushes.”
Texturing and rendering proved to be the most enjoyable part of the creation process for Kaufmann. “I try to deeply understand the materials and pay particular attention to the details of my asset, showing its history as well as making it more interesting and realistic,” she continues. Handpainted textures help Kaufmann to avoid a generated look and make something closer to her original reference.
When rendering her work Kaufmann makes sure to set the lighting in a way that effectively emphasises the more interesting details and textures of her piece. She adds: “I often see that with a poor render, half of the work done by the artist is not visible. I recommend paying more attention to this part of the process, especially for a portfolio.”
