Don’t for­get that the level it­self can be both a friend and foe for the player. Plan to use map el­e­ments as fea­tures, not just set dress­ing. If you de­fine things like fallen trees to jump over, chasms to jump across it will feel like a more en­gag­ing ex­pe­ri­ence. On top of that you could add things like foot­prints to mark out a sug­gested route for the player to fol­low.
