STEP BY STEP CREATE ACCURATE EARS IN ZBRUSH

-

01 THE BASE

We need a base for everything. Start with blocking out the very general outline of an ear. We divide the external ear into three parts: the tragus, helix and the lobule. Bear in mind that not all ears are the same, so let’s focus on the most general shape we can find reference for.

02 CARTILAGES AND SOFT TISSUE

At this point it would be tremendously useful to have glanced at the anatomical structure of an ear. Make notice of the cartilages and soft tissue. Observe how it all spirals towards the inner ear like channels, river banks that capture and deliver the sound right into the auditory canal. Block out outer cartilage, the helix, add the tragus and antitragus at the entrance to the inner ear, and roughly shape the lobule.

03 VOLUME

The next step is to add a little volume accenting the antihelix, scapha, superior crus and inferior crus of the ear. This is where some people struggle or even completely forget about the inferior crus and scapha altogether. Try to take some time distributing those parts so that you get more comfortable with positioning them.

04 DEFINE DETAILS

Now that we have all big parts blocked out, we can connect them and smooth it all out. Use the Damstandard brush to sculpt the ridge leading from the helix to the lobule. Subtly connect the antihelix to the antitragus, and sculpt the concha (cavum and cymba). Add more volume to the cartilages and there you have it, your basic, anatomically correct human ear.
