Andres Rios is a freelance concept artist, currently working in the video game industry on projects like the online action RPG Path Of Exile. “I haven’t got much experience, my professional career basically started this year,” Rios tells 3D World. This intricately detailed character belies Rios’ limited experience and took him just 16 hours to complete.
“Most of my personal pieces come from a thought,” he explains, “I see an interesting concept in my head and I either sketch it out on paper or write key words to remember the important aspects of it.” If the idea is fully formed in his head then Rios begins sculpting in Zbrush, if he feels it isn’t interesting enough yet he’ll mix various references with the initial idea until it forms an interesting concept.
Rios used Marvelous Designer to create the cloth robes, finding it to be faster than the alternatives. “I also used ornamental pieces by Milad Kambari for some of the detailing,” he continues. “For the texturing of the skin I used Polypaint and for the texturing of everything else I used Keyshot. Various renders helped me compose the image in Photoshop: beauty, specular, one for the blood, etc.”
Inspiration comes to Rios from many different sources, including nature, dreams, the work of other artists, video games, and films. He particularly likes the work of surrealist painter Zdzisław Beksinski, as well as video game director Hidetaka Miyazaki.
