Freelance 3D character artist and student, Yuditya Afandi, spent around three weeks on this emotive CG character, working for a few hours each day. Everything was sculpted and modelled in Blender, without the use of any unique workflow elements. “This project is more of a sculpting study,” Afandi tells 3D World, “so I approached everything manually from scratch without any base meshes. Except for the hair: for that, I used my own Curve object with a custom Bevel and Taper object, then more sculpting on top of it.”

Afandi used a selection of Blender’s basic brushes on the character, such as the Draw, Crease, Clay and Move brushes. The focus was on the art of sculpting, with Afandi studying anatomy, how cloth works and hair sculpting. Afandi adds: “I love the process of exploring the character, especially since this character was created from my imagination and derived from a lot of reference images.”

The desire to create characters similar to those he loves from pop culture is a key source of inspiration for Afandi. “I’m obsessed with the characters from Pixar and Disney films,” he explains, “also characters in the style of Blizzard Entertainment. I love game characters and those from Marvel and DC. That got me into becoming an artist.”
