ARTIST Gerard Kravchuk SOFTWARE Zbrush, Marvelous Designer, Keyshot, Marmoset Toolbag, Photoshop

This detailed fan art took Gameloft senior artist Gerard Kravchuk a month and a half from start to finish. Kravchuk was able to draw on 15 years of experience in the video game industry, as well as his freelance portfolio, throughout the process. “I do a lot of freelance work, which is a great way to keep my skill set up to date,” he explains. “The most noteworthy examples are sculpts for

Prime 1 studio which were used for 3D prints. I also have experience with animation, which is especially useful and valuable knowledge when posing my characters.”

He continues: “I have a pretty standard workflow – creating something unique, something individual, is the real challenge.” 2D software, such as Photoshop and Krita are often Kravchuk’s tools of choice in the early stages, but he also turns to 3D software like Zbrush and 3ds Max when the need arises. With the character’s composition and general proportions in place, Kravchuk gets to work on the base mesh.

At this stage, he also plans the T-pose in Zbrush, cloth simulation in Marvelous Designer or 3ds Max, and posing in Zbrush. Using Marvelous Designer for cloth simulation on Cable Annihilation allowed Kravchuk to speed up the process whilst achieving accurate results. “Out of everything, I’d say the part I enjoyed the most was sculpting and detailing the anatomy, especially the muscles,” he adds. The final step in Kravchuk’s workflow involves polishing and emphasising particular areas on the character, refining the 3D model.
