HOW CAN I CREATE A CARPET IN BLENDER?

I will show you an easy and powerful way to create a carpet in Blender 2.91. I will not use any external props, like textures or meshes, to create the final model – all the required elements are by default in the software.

The first thing to do is add a mesh, and the best primitive mesh for a carpet is a plane. Once added, we need to scale the plane to obtain a rectangular shape. The second step is to create a material for the mesh, so in the Shader Editor panel we can link the Noise Texture (using the one already in the software) to the Base Color input. Here we can change the texture as we prefer, in this case, I just scaled it a bit and since I’m going to create a dark grey carpet, I added a Hue Saturation Value in between the Noise Texture and the Base Color input. Here I desaturated the texture, decreasing the saturation to 0. Finally, decrease the roughness of the material and increase slightly the specularity, for greater realism.

Now that we’ve defined the material of the carpet, the next stage is to create the ‘hairs’. First, open the Particle Settings panel and add a particle system. To add a new particle system to an object, we have to go to the Particles tab of the Properties editor and click the small + button. An object can have many particle systems but for an asset like this, using just one is more than enough.

Each particle system has separate settings attached to it. These settings can be shared among different particle systems, so we do not have to copy every parameter manually and we can use almost the same effect on multiple objects.

Next, select the type of particle ‘hair’, needed for the carpet, and decrease the hair length as preferred. After this, click on Children and select the Interpolated method. In this way we can add more ‘child particles’ which can be modelled as we prefer – in this case for this carpet I selected the ‘kink type’ curly and I just decreased the frequency and amplitude of the particles.

These were the main steps for the creation of a carpet. As you can see, this software offers many different values, so once you get familiar with the main steps, I suggest you experiment with all the different parameters available to learn their functions and refine the final result.
