Work with dynamic cloth in Zbrush 2021

Dynamic cloth has been around for some time now, but not in Zbrush. Until Zbrush 2021 that is! Let’s take a look at how to use this new feature

We explore this new feature and discover how to make complex cloth simulations

Sculpting digital cloth is a difficult task. Cloth can have a life of its own, but there are still real-world rules that it has to obey. It can stretch, but only so far. It can fold, but in predictable ways once you start to look at it bunching together. You only have to take a look at your own jeans closely and you’ll see how complex cloth can be, but if you look long enough, you will start to notice things like pinch points, seams pulling in repeatable ways, folded creases at the back of the knees, bunching folds at the bottom of the legs and many more points of interest. And that only gets more complex when you start to look at things like curtains, bed sheets and cloaks. There are, of course, many new software packages that just handle cloth including Marvelous Designer, Clo3d and even Blender. That can get expensive if you have already purchased Zbrush, so it was amazing news when Pixologic announced that they were adding dynamics to Zbrush, giving us the ability to work with dynamic cloth and use a range of brushes to manipulate the cloth after it has settled.
