STEP BY STEP USE THE ASSET BROWSER IN BLENDER

-

01 ADD MODELS AND MATERIALS

Open the Blender file that contains the models and materials you want added to your Asset Browser. The best way to add an object or material is with the Outliner. This enables you to add multiple assets at the same time. To display all of your objects and materials, simply change the Outliner Display Mode to Blender File. Right click on your objects or materials and select ‘Mark as Asset’.

02 ORGANISE YOUR LIBRARY

With your assets marked and added to your Asset Browser, you’re ready to get them organised, which you can do using Catalogs. Think of these as folders that contain your assets. Using the plus sign next to All, create a new Catalog. You can create as many as you like and even nest them. Add an asset to a Catalog by dragging and dropping it from the righthand side into the Catalog on the left.

03 SET PREFERENCES

Your asset library is now ready to use in any file you like, but you need to tell Blender to load it at start-up. You can do this by going to Edit>preferences>file Paths and selecting the Asset Libraries tab. Click on the folder icon and then navigate to the Blender file that you used to create your library. Click the Save Preferences option to ensure your asset library is available whenever you need it.

04 USING YOUR NEW ASSET BROWSER

The final step in the whole process is to make use of these assets in your browser! This is as simple as dragging and dropping them across into your scene. If it’s an object, then it will be inserted straight into the scene wherever you click. Meanwhile, if it’s a material, make sure you let go of the mouse button over the object that you wish to apply it to.
